City of Cape Town bans fireworks during public celebrations

The City of Cape Town is banning all fireworks during public celebrations like Dewali, Guy Fawks or New Year’s Eve. Mayoral Committee Member for Safety, JP Smith says the city has decided from this year to forego previously designated firework sites because of, among others, public pressure.

Smith says the City is appealing to residents to refrain from setting off fireworks.

“The decision to forego designated sites was influenced by many reasons including the decreased appetite from sub-councils to approve designated sites, the cost associated with running the sites, including deploying staff and resources, and the growing public sentiment opposing the use of fireworks. Given that there will be no designated sites this year, the City appeals to residents to please refrain from setting off fireworks as it would be illegal outside of the designated area.”
