City of Cape Town implements level six water restrictions

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The City of Cape Town says the implementation of Level Six water restrictions from today will help to avoid Day Zero estimated in May this year, when the taps are predicted to run dry.

The latest water restrictions follow a national Water Department’s directive which requires urban users to reduce their water usage by 45% and agricultural users by 60%.

Daily water use remains at 87 litres per person.

“A household of four people should use far less that 350 litres per day. With the average household in Cape Town closer to three people, much can still be done to ensure that we are not queuing for water in March or April 2018. Our hot and dry summer is here and we have to cut our water usage now,” said Mayoral Spokesperson Zara Nicholson.

Many Capetonians support the City of Cape Town’s implementation of level six water restrictions.  These Capetonians say they understand the need for stricter measures.

“Well the 87 litres firstly is just a target that the maximum use, so obviously we have to aim to use much less than that. So the less water we use the better it is for everyone,” says one Capetonian.

Another resident says, “I didn’t realise that but its a good thing for time being we are in need of water . Water restrictions it fair enough to have water restrictions but is there a valid plan to contain i and contain the people of the water I don’t know. It’s a great thing we in need of water you see ya its a good thing that.”
