Residents of Ginsberg Location in King William’s Town in the Eastern Cape have invaded a vacant piece of land identified for housing development.
The project became idle due to technicalities and alleged corruption back in 2001.
The Ginsberg Civic Association has lambasted the housing department for failure to build houses for the Ginsberg residents since 1995.
Association spokesperson, Thembalekhaya Simanga says, “We are taking what we feel belongs to us. We’ve actually paid money for this land. In 2001 there was a Quitter project that never continued and people paid money for that and people were forcefully removed from their homes and some that paid never got houses because the houses were never built.”
“Three or four years later, Quitter was under investigation and was liquidated and people lost money there. Now the only thing they have left is this land. Human settlement doesn’t own this land. We own this land. We paid money for this land.”
