Churches resort to virtual Easter celebrations

Reading Time: 3 minutes

Most churches have chosen to use technology to conduct their services throughout the Ester period. Others just decided to cancel all their Easter plans due to the national lockdown. This after large gatherings are prohibited by the lockdown regulations to curb the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Members sang and prayed together from the comfort of their homes.

More than 40 congregants of the Sunrise City Church International conducted their service via an application known as ZOOM.

Apostle Dimakatso Mongwe says they have been using the application since the beginning of the lockdown. At the end of the service, she gives the congregants an opportunity to greet one another like they normally do when they are gathered in their church.

Other churches say they will use their different online platforms to share information about the COVID-19 pandemic and safety tips.

Reverend Ronald Lushaba of the Lutheran Church in Mpumalanga says they had to learn fast on how to make use of the online platforms to conduct their sermons.

“We will be focusing on the seven words that Jesus said on the cross and also we are going to encourage other people to stay at home. Also what we are going to do is to help our people to understand the negative impact on our economy of the country and also the positive thing about this that we are at home, we have a good time to stay with our families and share ideas and prepare whatever we should be doing as a church being at home.”

However, some residents do not believe in using the modern technology to worship.

“We don’t use phones in our church; when we go to Moria, we are not allowed to use camera phones at all. So it’s going to be so hard for our pastor to be all over the social media. And it’s all about fame and luring people to people to come to your church.”

In the video below, churches turn to alternative channels to celebrate the spirit of Easter:
