Christmas fever engulfs Port Elizabeth

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The Christmas fever has hit many homes across the country, with some residents going all out to decorate their houses in celebration of this period. Port Elizabeth is no exception, as the city’s residents have caught the fever, some doing it for charity.

Port Elizabeth resident, Arthur Muller, has been inviting people to his house for the past 13 years to experience the Christmas extravaganza.

Each year, he has a different theme and in 2017 Shakespear’s Midnight Summer Dream is the theme attracting many people to his home.

Muller says of the decor, “This year’s theme is Midnight Summer’s Dream by Shakespeare. I have used fairies, jesters little Dwarfs, butterflies, dragon flies and I tried to keep it original, but not like your normal Christmas tree that you’re getting.”

The Muller family also believes in the spirit of giving during this period.

They host fundraising events for the benefit of charities.

In 2017, they designed a Christmas cake, which was later won through a ruffle.

Darelle-Lee Muller says in 2017 their profits will go to an animal shelter.

“Christmas is a time for giving, sharing. It’s filled with love, but it’s putting Christ back into Christmas and being a Christian, we need to accentuate Christ.”

Those who visited the home were impressed by the decorations.

The Mullers are not the only Port Elizabeth residents treating their neighbours to Xmas festivities in 2017.

Henk Grootendorst has created a magical Christmas display that attracts both young and old to his house.

His decorations include a four-metre Christmas tree and a choo-choo train that has little gifts.

Grootendorst says they are doing this for the love of Christmas spirit.

“We want to give something back to the community and we are doing it, out of our hearts. It’s not an open-wallet event. Everything is for free. In terms of electricity, we are not using a lot of power. It’s led. So, it’s not a lot.”

Some of the visitors were lucky enough to spot Santa and give him a wish list.
