Richards Bay were looking to claim their second big scalp, after beating Kaizer Chiefs in the last-32 encounter last month.
But Chippa had other ideas with Liberian Anthony Laffor breaking the deadlock in the 5th minute after a defensive blunder. The homeside pushed forward and they were rewarded with another goal from Moloisane Mokhele in the 58th minute.
The Natal Rich Boys scored a consolation goal in the final minute of regulation time but was too little too late, with Chippa United winning the game 2-1.
