The Free State Education Department has launched the global Child Rights Online Platform in Bloemfontein to coincide with Human Rights Month.

The aim of the initiative is to ensure that children’s rights are promoted and protected in schools as enshrined in the constitution.

Education MEC Tate Makgoe says the platform will prevent learners from dropping out of school and create a safe environment. He says officials have been trained to roll-out the programme in the province.

“We already have 22 people or teachers in the department that have been trained, and they were trained in Sweden. We are rolling out as a province, training to specific schools, especially schools were we have serious problems of ill-discipline of huge corporal punishment. We already have a critical mass as the province of the Free State to go and train other teachers to be change agents to make sure our schools are child friendly.”
