Chiefs cannot play Cup final like club in mourning: Komphela

Former Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela has called on the Amakhosi faithful to get behind their team if they want to see them produce the goods in the Nedbank Cup final against TS Galaxy in Durban on Saturday.

The Soweto giants will go into the game low on confidence after failure to win any of their last seven Absa Premiership matches.

They paid the ultimate price for that by missing out on the top eight. But they do have a shot of redemption against a side that comes from a division below them and Komphela says they have the quality to bounce back.

One thing Komphela warned against was that his ex-team should not be playing like a club in mourning.

There is not too much confidence in the current team, particularly from supporters, following their shortcomings in the league, where they last won against Maritzburg United way back in early March.

They have since lost three matches and drawn four times and Komphela says it is at times like these that fans are needed the most.

Komphela says fans should learn lessons from the recent European Champions League semi-finals where both Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur staged miraculous recoveries to beat opponents that looked to have already booked their final spots.

The Lamontville Golden Arrows’ coach believes these are perfect examples of how supporters can carry a team and make a real difference to a game.

And he hopes for the same from the Chiefs army at a sold-out Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday. – Report by Thahir Asmal
