Chatsworth youth centre needs a makeover

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The SABC News team in Durban will be giving The Chatsworth Youth
Centre a new lease on life. It is supposed to be a ‘safe haven’ for youths. The centre needs a complete
refurbishment because it is in disrepair. It has broken windows,
loose bricks and a neglected garden There also seems to be limited
activity for the youth at the centre.
The team will
do repair and maintenance work at the centre, including painting and also try to involve some of the centre’s previous partners. It will also provide
moral support to the centre’s various stakeholders.
The centre comprises a main hall,
games room, information technology unit, resource facility and clinic.Dedicated
volunteers at the centre strive to uplift the lives of community members.

The centre was an initiative of
former president Nelson Mandela. The 12 million centre was opened on October 14, 2003 after the community had called for a recreational facility in
memory of the 13 teenagers who died at the Throb nightclub on March 24, 2000.

The centre’s partners included Nandos, Irvin & Johnson Foods,
Daimler Chrysler and Debis Fleet Management.

Our Lotus midday current affairs
show will broadcast for 67 minutes at the centre.
