Charlotte Maxeke Hospital prepares to reopen to the public at the end of March

Gauteng Health MEC, Nomathemba Mokgethi says the Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, in Johannesburg, is expected to reopen to the public at the end of the month.

The hospital was closed in April last year, after a fire gutted parts of the building.

Partial handover due on Friday

Mokgethi says the partial handover of the hospital’s emergency unit is due on Friday.

“They have partially handed over some parts. They have started with the deep cleaning of the accident and emergency unit and they will do the handover to us on the 18th March 2022, which is on Friday.

“But we still need to do the deep cleaning and do the reorientation the staff so that when we open for patients, which is going to happen towards the end of March, all systems will be going,” says Mokgethi.

On Monday, the MEC assured the public that the government remains committed to ensure that speedy remedial work is carried out at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic hospital in Johannesburg.

Mokgethi said repair work at the casualty section suffered a setback due to theft of copper pipes, electrical wiring and circuit breakers.

The MEC’s Spokesperson Kwara Kekana said, “The partial handover of the Accident and Emergency Unit commenced on the 10th March. This means that from here onwards the following will take place to get the section ready for hand over.”

“Deep cleaning of the areas that are handed back to the Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital CMJAH. The City of Joburg will be checking for the compliance of the areas and issuing operational certificate,” says Kekana.

Firefighters, who responded to the blaze at the hospital say they could have acted more swiftly had the fire hydrant system been fully operational.
