South Africa’s gold medallist Chad le Clos has won his heat of the 100 metres butterfly after another astonishing last 50 metres.
Le Clos fought back from fourth at the turn to touch first in a time 51.54 seconds. It was the fastest time of all the qualifiers for tonight’s semi-finals.The most decorated Olympian Michael Phelps set the second fastest time, winning is heat in 51.72 seconds.
Meanwhile, Le Clos decided to withdraw from this evening’s 200 metres individual medley to focus on the 100 metres butterfly. He only qualified seventh fastest for the individual medley final and felt that he had a better chance of winning a medal in the shorter butterfly event.
