The wife of former Public Service Minister, Collins Chabane, has expressed gratitude to the families of her late husband’s two bodyguards. The two were killed with Chabane in a car accident on the N1 outside Polokwane on Sunday.

Chabane’s memorial service is currently underway in Pretoria.

In a speech delivered by someone else on her behalf, Mavis Chabane said Sergeants Lesiba Sekele and Lawrence Lentsoane dedicated their lives to ensuring that Chabane was always protected.

“The two dedicated police officers have been part of the Chabane household and family since 2009 and we have enjoyed a healthy relationship and they provided a service to my husband. I would like to pass my heartfelt and sincere condolences to the family of the sergeants, for their dedication and love with which they treated us and did their work.”

Meanwhile, Reserve Bank Governor Lesetja Kganyago has described Chabane as a selfless servant of the people.

Kganyago says Chabane will always be remembered for his diligence.

“A great and selfless servant for our people, a fighter for liberation, a developmental activist, who was driven by a passion to tackle the sketch of poverty and under development. A friend, a soldier, a leader, a political pragmatist, a diligent worker, our brother, a father to many of the children who benefited from the charitable work that he had done throughout the Shakani Foundation.”
