One SA Movement leader,  Mmusi Maimane says one way of celebrating the 25th anniversary of former president Nelson Mandela’s signing of the Constitution is to speed up the amendment of the Electoral Act.

A process is currently underway to amend the Act to afford independent candidates the right to contest elections at both the provincial and national level.

The Constitutional Court has declared the Electoral Act unconstitutional and sent it back to Parliament for rectification in June last year.

It gave Parliament 24 months to rectify the defect in the Act.

Judgment on the constitutionality of Electoral Act regarding independent candidates:

A group of independent candidates successfully challenged the constitutionality of the Act.

Maimane says the passing of the Bill should be expedited.
