Police Minister, Bheki Cele has warned criminals to desist from committing crimes. Cele was speaking during the launch of the National Traditional Policing Concept at Oakley in Busbuckridge, Mpumalanga.
He described the new National Traditional Policing concept as a tool that is going to help reduce high crime rate in rural villages across the country.
Bushbuckridge is one of the crime hotspots in Mpumalanga. It is vastly rural and traditional leadership plays a role in the day-to-day living of the people in the area. But, crime has become a headache to many traditional leaders. And, the launch of the traditional policing concept will help the leaders protect their subjects among others.

CONTRALESA chairperson, Kgoshi Lameck Mokoena says the initiative will help reduce crime in rural areas.

“With this kind of partnership I know it will help to uproot some of these unwanted elements from within our community, it’s a pity that in this our country, for instance, you go to Mbombela Magistrates Court, where there’s not less than 300 cases rape cases in Mbombela Magistrate Court alone, and in that 300 cases, there is only one magistrate, one magistrate who is looking after those cases, it is impossible for that magistrate to deal with those cases, we are appealing to you minister in your time you can meet with the mister of justice let them do something about this.”

Police Minister, Bheki Cele, who was accompanied by Commissioner, Kehla Sitole, also opened a police service point office at Oakley Traditional Authority. A police station away from the police station. Each policing area will be having dedicated police vehicles to respond to crime-related incidents.

Minister Cele urged police officers to respect the police-sponsored resources.

“When they use the camera you smile but when they use the gun you don’t smile you shoot back, and when the dust settles, it must be clear whose the dead bodies we picking, we are about to go around picking dead bodies of the police, the president said we must train 12 000 police and that money we don’t train them to go to the graves.”

Community members have also welcomed the initiative. They are convinced that the concept will help reduce the scourge of crimes in their areas.

The concept will work in conjunction with the Community Policing Forum in all the villages across the country.
