On Friday morning the Vereeniging Regional Court struck the matter off the roll.

The case against 36 taxi drivers in Vereeniging has been provisionally withdrawn. The group was arrested on Wednesday for public violence after taxi operators in the Vaal took to the streets over an unfinished taxi rank in the area.

On Wednesday Vereeniging was brought to a standstill. Taxi drivers say lack of better roads and service infrastructure sparked their anger and frustration.

The heightened tensions resulted in a stand-off between police and the protesters.

Dozens were arrested and were released on bail on Thursday. On Friday morning the Vereeniging Regional Court struck the matter off the roll.

The taxi operators say they plan to open a case against the police for damage to their vehicles during the protest.
