The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance, Yunus Carrim says there is no change in the decision to have public hearings on the matter.

The Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance, Yunus Carrim has hit back at the DA Member of Parliament David Maynier for what he calls “political posturing.”

Carrim was responding to an earlier claim made by Maynier accusing the committee of delaying to call a meeting with Steinhoff International Holdings in relation to the scandal surrounding accounting irregularities.

Maynier says he wrote to the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance last year in December requesting him to consider scheduling public hearings on the allegations of accounting irregularities by Steinhoff International.

He adds that ever since then, he has not received a formal reply in his request, instead the committee issued a public statement thereafter stating that it will be working with the Standing Committee on Public Accounts to begin its oversight role by calling Steinhoff representatives to account to Parliament.

In response to these claims, the Chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance lashed out to Maynier accusing him of playing politics by taking advantage of the situation.

Carrim says there is no change in the decision to have public hearings on the matter.

He says he acted immediately after the issue came to the public long before Maynier wrote to him.

The chairperson of the Standing Committee on Finance says the two hearings are scheduled to take place at the end of this month in a joint meeting together with Standing Committee on Public Accounts (Scopa) at the same time.
