The entire train service in the Western Cape has been suspended as a result of the fire.

Cape Town Train Station has been closed after a large fire destroyed 18 carriages in the early hours of Thursday morning.

Metrorail spokesperson, Riana Scott, says platforms nine to 16 have been affected by the fire.

She says the entire train service in the Western Cape has been suspended as a result of the fire.

She says two trains were initially on fire but it soon spread to adjacent platforms.

In total 18 carriages were destroyed by the fire.

“The entire Cape Town Train Station is closed temporarily and the entire regional service is suspended until further notice.”

“Commuters are advised to find alternative transport and we will update commuters during the course of the day as events unfold,” says Scott.
