Cape Town Cycle Tour kicks off

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The organisers of the 45th edition of the Cape Town Cycle Tour say the event has kicked off to a good start, in pleasant weather conditions. Over 28 000 people are competing in the biggest timed bike race in the world today.

There are several road closures in place in and around the CBD.

In addition to the popular 109 kilometre route circling the Cape Peninsula, a shorter route of 42 kilometres has also been introduced.

Director of the Cape Town Cycle Tour, David Bellairs, says the shorter route is to encourage new and young cyclists to participate.

“It’s actually a beautiful route through the Constantia valley and back, finishing at the Grand Parade with Table Mountain behind you. We’re hoping that that is going to encourage youth, women, people who are new to the sport and people who have gotten unfit and are trying to get back into it slowly. I think it’s the way of the future.”
