Cape Town City players shift focus to COSAFA Cup

Reading Time: 2 minutes

While the 2018-2019 South African football season comes to an end this weekend with the Nedbank Cup final, there will be no holidays for some players who will switch their focus to international football for the next month or so.

Two players from Cape Town City who are expected to represent this countries later this month at the COSAFA Senior Men’s Challenge Cup are City’s captain Thamsanqa Mkhize and their Mozambican international Edmilson Dove.

After helping City finish in 4th place in the league, Dove says he is now looking forward to the annual tournament that will be hosted in Durban this year, after Zimbabwe pulled out of hosting.

Mozambique narrowly missed out on qualification for the Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt next month. While disappointed, Dove says the COSAFA Cup gives them a chance to regroup.

City Captain Thami Mkhize is grateful to have been part of the Bafana Bafana setup and after a good season for City, he is hoping to play a major role in next month’s Afcon finals.

Mkhize says the COSAFA Cup will be great preparation for next month’s Afcon tournament, and will allow Bafana coach Stuart Baxter to see a few different options.

The COSAFA Senior Men’s Challenge Cup will kick off in Durban on May 25th and run until June the 8th and will feature five countries that have qualified for next month’s Afcon – South Africa, Zimbabwe, Angola, Namibia and Uganda. – Report by Rob Delport
