Not all primary school learners will be back in class full-time due to capacity challenges.

According to the Department of Basic Education, all provinces have reported that they will not be able to accommodate primary school learners at the same time.

Basic education officials visited the Kabelo primary school in Katlehong east of Johannesburg on Monday morning.

The video below is focusing on the reopening of schools:

They monitored the first day of the full-time return of primary school learners.

The department’s spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says it’s unfortunate that some classrooms were not designed to meet the required one-metre social distance.

“We are saying that where it is possible, please do it. Where it is not possible to continue with the rotation system. It is important to make this clear that we are not forcing any school to take all the learners back if it does not have the resources to do so. Or if it does not have a plan on managing this,” adds Mhlanga.

The return of primary school learners will enable recovery of learning and teaching time that was lost due to the recently extended school break. To assist in this endeavour, we call on all caregivers eligible for the vaccine to play their part and vaccinate as soon as possible. pic.twitter.com/XQQr8Qyd6Z
