New incidences of cancer have quadrupled in the last 10 years in the Northern Cape with the disease threatening to overtake HIV as the leading cause of death in the province.

This is according to Northern Cape Health Department’s medical director Dr Dion Theys.

He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the Northern Cape Cancer Centre of Excellence and Research project.

The project is a partnership between the department and a pharmaceutical company.

“The partnership is not only on treatment. The partnership with Bristol-Myers Squibb pharmaceutical company is around awareness building; it’s about surveillance; it’s about testing; encouraging people to test early for cancer,” explains Theys.
