Residents of the Durban South Basin have called on government to stop trucking companies from operating within residential areas.
They took to the streets of Montclair, Merebank, Clairwood and Wentworth to raise their concerns.
The community says trucking companies are taking over residential zones and are forcing people out of their homes.
The chairperson of the Clairwood Ratepayers Association, Mervyn Reddy, is calling on President Cyril Ramaphosa to urgently intervene.
“The trucks are also decaying the areas as a result forcing residents out of formal homes not only that it also creating Environmental impact its actually causing sicknesses such as asthma and lung diseases.”
The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance on the other hand says it will challenge a High Court ruling on the provincial government’s approval of the establishment of a R3.5 billion logistics park at the old Clairwood Racecourse site in Merebank.
“In June papers will be served to six judges plus all the people responsible that want to place 2000 trucks at the junction of Merebank and Clairwood. So we are quite angry that the government had not been listening to the people of the country,” says  the Alliance’s Desmond D’Sa.
