Call for Eshowe peace talks after arson attacks

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Farmers in the eShowe area near the KwaZulu-Natal north coast are calling for talks with the community after a farmhouse, a hostel for farmworkers and other buildings on three farms were burnt down in apparent revenge attacks.

This came after a security guard attached to the farms, allegedly shot and killed community member S’phamandla Xulu, who was on his way to fish in a dam on a privately owned farm.

Economic Development MEC Sihle Zikalala is set to lead peace talks.

ENtumeni/eShowe Farmers Association Chairperson Craig says they’re counting the cost of the arson attacks.

“We haven’t been able to tally the amount but during a meeting there was a number of R15 million that was passed around. We are more than happy to deal with the matter speedily.”

“We would like to speak with the community and would like to know where we have gone wrong, and what we have done wrong. We are eagerly waiting to hear what we can do to change things,” says Hanbury-King.
