Bus, taxi strike leaves Hammanskraal commuters stranded

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Thousands of commuters remained stranded in Hammanskraal north of Pretoria as buses and taxis are not operating.

On Wednesday, a protest by taxi drivers turned violent as commuters turned against them – damaging some taxis and setting a taxi association’s office alight.

Drivers are not happy with an agreement entered into by taxi owners and the Tshwane municipality.

According to the agreement, taxis from Hammanskraal no longer let commuters off in the Pretoria CBD but at the Wonderboom Terminus just outside the city.

Hammanskraal Interim Transport Task Team Simon Sephokgole says, “The situation is now calm cars are moving but there are no buses, no. Our people are still in the struggle of going to work today. So we are still waiting for the answer. What we can say is that we hope to find the solution of the problem so that our community must not suffer.”
