The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) says it hopes the unions and the bargaining chamber reach an agreement soon, as the countrywide bus strike is financially crippling the ordinary person on the street.

The bargaining council and the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration (CCMA) have proposed an offer of 8.75% for the first year and 8.25% for the second year.

Sanco says while this prolonged bargaining takes place, thousands of commuters have had to go into debt in order to pay for more expensive transport in order to get to work.

The Organisation’s Jabu Mahlangu says people that use buses are usually the poor.

Mahlangu says, “If these buses have stopped, as they have for the month, without any indication as to when they are going start operating, people get involved in debt, people are going to loan sharks to borrow money to pay for transport which is higher.”
