Reading Time: 2 minutes

Eastern Cape Transport MEC Weziwe Tikana has made a call to families whose loved ones were on a Vaal Maseru bus from Welkom to Mthatha on Wednesday, to come and identify their bodies at the Forensic Department in Mthatha. Seven of the 13 people who died on the R58 near Ngcobo have been identified. Five other people died on a Translux bus near Sterkstroom on the N6.

Tikana says one of the victims of the Sterkstroom accident has not yet been identified.

“We appeal to their relatives to come to the Forensic Department in Mthatha and also in Queenstown. Up to now only seven out of 13 people have been identified. We appeal to all people who are aware that their loved ones were travelling home for the Easter weekend to come and identify bodies.”

Tikana adds that an arrangement has been made with the provincial Department of Health and the Road Accident Fund to work overtime on Friday to assist the affected families.

“We’ve negotiated with the Department of Health to open for the post mortem services. We appeal to those who were here to identify the bodies to come tomorrow (Friday). Also the Road Accident Fund officials will be here to do the support to those.”
