Burning of bus unacceptable: Cosatu

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Congress of SA Trade Unions (Cosatu) members are expected to picket outside the Mecklenburg Magistrate’s Court in Burgersfort in Limpopo, where five suspects arrested for allegedly torching six mineworkers inside a bus will be making their first appearance.

Twenty eight people were injured in the incident and seven of them are still being treated in hospital.

The bus was carrying 52 workers to the Modikwa platinum mine when it was petrol bombed.

Cosatu spokesperson Sizwe Pamla says the incident is unacceptable.

“We’ll be picketing to put pressure to make sure that those suspects are not given bail because we believe that what happened in Burgersfort is something that should not happen in any normal democracy and in any normal society.”

“It’s unacceptable for workers to be burned alive for doing nothing except going to work just to earn a living for their families,” says Pamla.
