Western Cape Finance Minister Dr Ivan Meyer has allocated the bulk of his R63 billion budget to health and education. He is tabling the budget in the provincial legislature.

Meyer says R23 billion will go to health and a further R22 billion to education.

He says the current drought has negatively impacted on the budget allocation, but essential services have been made a priority.

“It is important given the risks of the current budget as it relates to the drought and the water crisis and the national budget cuts. We came to the conclusion that it is impossible to cut front line service delivery and so, this budget is protecting health, education, social services because those departments are involved in front line service delivery. So, this budget protects those departments. We are protecting the poor.”
