Building hijacking kingpin remanded in custody

Reading Time: < 1 minute

The bail application of the alleged kingpin behind a building hijacking syndicate has been postponed until next Wednesday in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court.

City of Johannesburg Mayor Herman Mashaba personally attended Thursday’s court appearance, together with his new Metro Police Chief, David Tembe.

Jonathan Constable Bongani Khathide and Kingsley Eke were arrested after a landlord complained that her tenants had stopped paying rental.

The mayor says this is a minor case and believes that Constable may be linked to other matters.

When the bail application was due to get underway, the Investigating Officer was surprisingly not ready.

Magistrate LJ van der Schyff says, “When the accused appeared before me for the first time on 29 December last year, I postponed the matter until today (Thursday) for address verification. It was not postponed for a bail application today (Thursday). The investigating officer thought for a while that he was ready, and I had time. So, there was no reason not to do the bail application, but actually it wasn’t set down for a bail application and so, under the circumstances I am going to grant the state’s application.”
