Buffalo City Metro says it has plans to increase the number of lifeguards at East London beaches. This follows the drowning of a third beachgoer at the Eastern Beach on Saturday.

On Friday, two Grade 7 learners from a school in Mthatha drowned at the same beach.

Police say they have opened inquest dockets following the incidents.

Municipal spokesperson, Samkelo Ngwenya has called on beachgoers to exercise caution when swimming.

“We have saved a lot of people who have been able to be free, but having said that, we are facing difficulties in as far as people adhering to the rules of swimming are concerned. People need to swim in demarcated areas; people need to swim within the instructions of our lifeguards. For the upcoming festive season, we are going to make some additions. We have advertised 42 posts and our lifeguards are some of the best in the country.”
