Agriculture ministers from the Brics countries will converge in Mpumalanga this week. The Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, in partnership with the Mpumalanga provincial government, is hosting the four-day event.

The theme for the 8th meeting is “Climate Smart Approaches”. The findings of the meeting will be tabled at next month’s Brics meeting to held in South Africa.

The province which is hosting the event, is an agricultural province that has been affected by climate change.

Now ministers from Brics countries are deliberating on ways to counter climate change in agriculture.

Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa have to come up with ways of sustaining food security through agriculture.

” We are sharing ideas with all the Brics countries and neighbouring countries the smart way of dealing with this climate change,” said Vusi Shongwe, Mpumalanga MEC for Agriculture.

Officials participating in the summit will visit affected farmers to hear how they have survived. Climate change affects food security and the economy.

Rural areas and small farmers are said to be the most hit by climate change. They believe that they will benefit from the summit.
