Brad Binder shines in Moto2 championship

Reading Time: 2 minutes

South Africa’s Brad Binder has claimed a podium position for a third time in succession in the Moto2 championship. Binder finished third behind his Red Bull KTM Ajo teammate Miguel Oliveira and Team Marc VDS’s Franco Morbidelli in the Moto2 season finale at Valencia.

The race started with a duel between Marc VDS duo, Alex Marquez and Morbidelli. The latter, however, squandered a better start after running wide in the first two corners.

Marquez led early on from pole, but was eventually demoted by Morbidelli on Lap 3.

KTM duo, Oliveira and Brad Binder pushed into third and fourth, respectively.

It took Oliveira five laps to make his move. Morbidelli had built a two-second lead from the Spaniard.

Oliveira went on to claim his and KTM’s third consecutive win in the Moto2 after a late surge on the champion.

The season finale of the 50th year of the World Rallycross Championship was held in South Africa for the first time. The top formula cars are the 447 KW supercars, which can outrun a Formula 1 car to 100 km/h by more than a second.

The cars are modified hatchback saloons like the Peugeot 208, Audi S1, Ford Fiesta and VW Polo Gti. Johan Kristoffersson opened a gap of 3-point-one seconds lead and never looked back.

“It was an amazing week for us and it’s very great to finish in the best way. It’s so good to pack everything together and go here from a new victory. The way that Johan is driving now he really deserves the win. It’s a great honour to be part of this great team,” said Kristoffersson.

The 2018 season of the FIA World Rallycross Championship will begin in Spain in April and again finish in South Africa in November.
