The memorial service for Jazz music presenter and radio legend Mesh Mapetla will be held in Soweto on Friday.

The service will take place at the Diepkloof hall from One o’clock in the afternoon. He will be buried on Saturday at the Wespark cemetery in Johannesburg.

Bra Mesh, as he was fondly known, died at the Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital on New Year’s day aged 71.

He worked for several radio stations among them Radio Metro and Lesedi FM where he presented Jazz music programmes.

His former colleague and radio presenter Ike Phaahla remembers reading his first news bulletin in the 90’s on Bra Mesh’s show at the then Radio Metro.

“I hadn’t been in a live studio before and he was very helpful. He welcomed me and made sure that I was comfortable, I had my first bulletin on his show. He’s one of my mentors when it comes to great music, because he had an ear for great music, Mesh Mapetla was very humble. He guided me through Jazz, my appreciation for Jazz. We attended quiet a number of Jazz Festivals together.”
