Botswana people celebrate Masire’s life

Reading Time: < 1 minute

Kanye village, north of Botswana capital Gaborone, is celebrating the life of its son Sir Ketumile Masire, who has been lauded as an internationalist and democrat.

Masire passed away on Thursday at a private hospital in Gaborone after undergoing surgery.

Masire was born and bred in Kanye 91 years ago, and he will be buried in his home village on Thursday, an area which produced migrant mineworkers for South African mines.

From humble beginnings, he defied the odds to become an international statesman.

He will be remembered as an educationalist, and the school that he established in his home town bares testimony.

Some of his peers at the local traditional council continue to sing his praises.

Meanwhile, at the Masire home, villagers are preparing for his final homecoming.

Masire will be buried next to his homestead, alongside his wife.
