The government of Botswana has decided to lift restrictions on vegetable imports. According to the Minister of Lands and Agriculture in Gaborone, this will be done in phases and subject to further engagement with all stakeholders locally and elsewhere.
South Africa has been affected by the ban.
Botswana has announced that it will lift import restrictions with immediate effect on turmeric, patty pan, pumpkin, sweet potatoes, green peas, mushrooms and other products.
The second phase will include beetroot, butternut, onions, potatoes and watermelons.
The government says this will be implemented on a gradual basis and will be informed by needs and capacity by 1 April next year. This will be subject to a review that will take into account the Southern African Customs Union.
The Department of Land and Agriculture further says import restrictions will be imposed as and when the production of commodities is relatively high and available.
