Angry residents of Botshabelo, east of Bloemfontein, have threatened to withhold their support for the ANC, if the party fails to address their concerns. They raised them with ANC deputy president David Mabuza, who has taken the party’s election campaign to the area.

Residents say that their main concern is that they do not have flushing toilets.

“Our main challenge is that we don’t have any toilets. They are not the ones that flush and we also we don’t have any roads here. It’s a struggle because when it’s raining; it’s mud everywhere and cars usually get stuck.”

Mabuza has conceded that the concerns of the residents are legitimate. He says that the government must provide better services to the people.

“As the ANC we’re determined to confront these issues head on. There’s no other way; we must provide better services to our people. We must strengthen our local government; our councillors must learn to work with the people. The province must work with the people so that we address these challenges.”
