As the African National Congress (ANC)’s leadership race gains momentum, debate is also intensifying on what gender the party leader should be.

Former National Assembly Speaker, Gwen Mahlangu-Nkabinde says both the country and the ANC are ready for a female president.

Her comment comes at the time when ANC Member of Parliament Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma and Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa are front-runners for party president.

However, there are perceptions that Dlamini-Zuma really is a front for  her former husband, President Jacob Zuma.

“I think the ANC has a lot of potential when it comes to women. We were all trained; we have all been given an opportunity to be sharpened. There are many women who are ready, they can take over. I will be very happy if women win on merit not on the ticket of being a woman but on being the best candidates South Africa has,” adds Mahlangu-Nkabinde.
