A collection of stories, pictures and accounts of what transpired during the devastating Knysna Fires in June this year has been compiled into a book.

Knysna Fire Stories documents the wildfires that ravaged the Garden Route towns of Sedgefield, Knysna and Plettenberg Bay.

Eight people died in the fire and at least 1000 properties were destroyed.

The book was launched Tuesday night at the Simola Hotel in Knysna.

John Nobles from non-profit organisation, the Eden Community Initiative, says the book is a testament to the power of a community to work together.

“It’s written by the whole community. So we collected 3500 photographs, 150 stories from the people, some of them handwritten and some of them transcribed by people who couldn’t or sometimes too emotional to write their own stories. It also has video footage on a DVD at the back of the book and also songs that were written at the time. It was a very emotional time for people,” says Nobles.
