A unique book which provides insight into the thirteen prominent individuals of African descent who have won the Nobel Peace Prize since 1950 –Africa’s Peacemakers: Nobel Peace Laureates of African Descent has been launched.

Speaking on SAfm PM Live, Executive Director of the Centre for Conflict Resolution and book editor Dr. Adekeye Adebajo says: “The idea of how peace making is done and what makes good peace makers and celebrating their achievements is something that I think a Centre for Conflict Resolution like ours should be doing. So I think that was part of the motivation (behind the book).”

Dr. Adebajo adds, “There needs to be a bridge between Africa and its Diaspora and the strong links that were there during the Pan African struggle, citing this as another motivation for his book.”

The book highlights leaders such as Barack Obama, whose career was inspired by the civil rights and anti-apartheid struggles of fellow Nobel Peace laureates Marin Luther King, Jr., Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu, and Albert Luthuli.

Adebajo says he also focused on Nobel Peace Laureates as the “Nobel Peace Prize helps us to frame the debate about peacemakers.”

The book also looks at influential figures involved in peace-making such as Ralph Bunche, Anwar Sadat, Kofi Annan, and F.W. De Klerk; as well as Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and Mohamed El-Baradei.
