The Eastern Cape Arts and Culture Department, the PanSALB and the Steve Biko Foundation are hosting a provincial Book Fair in Ginsberg in King William’s Town.
This is in response to President Cyril Ramaphosa‘s call to encourage a culture of reading among South Africans after the country came last out of 50 countries in reading.
MEC Fezeka Nkomonye-Bayeni says the nation has the responsibility to promote its own languages.
“We promote reading as a culture but also reading in our own languages because we can only develop when we pride ourselves with the language that we were born with. A language is one form of identity so it is important that we do not promote other people’s languages but our own language.”
