Book explaining Climate Change launched

Reading Time: 2 minutes

A 24 page book explaining Climate Change patterns in Southern Africa was launched at the Highway Africa and PACAI conference. The book termed Climate risk and vulnerability – a hand book for Southern Africa – was written by 20 climate specialists and edited by Claire Davis, over a period of seven months. It aims to educate ‘ordinary people on the street’ on Climate Change by using graphs and simple language to explain the phenomenon. “The Blue book was our attempt to pull together some of our findings on Climate Change in Southern Africa (SADC). We thought it will be helpful as some of the stuff (in the book) stays in laboratories and academic journals and does not get out there,” says one of the contributors in the book, Dr Emma Archer, in an interview with SABC News.

The COP17 meeting will be held in Durban later this year

The book covers topics such as Southern Africa’s climate: Current state and recent historical changes; Seasonal forecast: Communicating current climate variability in Southern Africa; Regional scenarios of future climate change over Southern Africa, Risk of adverse impacts from climate change in Southern Africa amongst other topics.
Archer added that they want to make the book available to everyone especially ahead of the COP17 meeting, which will be held in Durban, South Africa later this year.
On why the book only focuses on the SADC region when climate change affects the entire world, Archer said they choose to focus on SADC because the CSIR which spearheaded the project was a member of the region.
The second edition of the book will be available in 2013.
