Eastern Cape police are investigating a case of murder after the body of a teenage girl was found near a waterfall in Ngangelizwe in Mthatha on Wednesday.

16-year-old Thandiswa Molefe’s body was wrapped in a blanket and had burn wounds. She went missing late last month.

Gender-based violence continues to plague many women in South Africa:

Police Spokesperson Priscilla Naidu says they are seeking the public’s assistance in apprehending the perpetrator.

“It is alleged that on 1 September  2021 at about 11:00, children were playing near a waterfall when they noticed the body of a deceased person. They called the elders who reported the matter to the police. The deceased was a young female, 16 years old. She was wrapped in a blanket and tied with electric cable and she had burn marks on the head. It is alleged that the deceased went missing last week Thursday and her grandmother reported to her family. The circumstances surrounding the murder are under investigation,” says Naidu.
