The Blue Bulls rugby player accused of rape has been granted bail of R10000 in the New Brighton Magistrate’s Court in Port Elizabeth.

The 19 year-old is accused of raping an 18 year-old girl in an open veld near KwaMagxaki in December, but has maintained the sex was consensual.

In terms of the bail conditions, he must report to the Sunnyside police station in Pretoria three times a week, and may not contact any witnesses or the complainant.

Some of the victim’s supporters left immediately after Magistrate Rhodes made her ruling.

Women rights activist, Lihle Sokhuthu expressed her disappointment.

“The justice system has again failed us. We were protesting for no bail. We wanted him to remain inside until this thing has been justified. I don’t think any girl child would cry rape when she was never raped,” says Sokhuthu.
