African National Congress (ANC) members in Gauteng say they are prepared to defend Luthuli House in Johannesburg with force if needs be, when the Black First Land First (BLF) movement  along with other groups march to the party’s headquarters on Monday.

BLF is marching under the banner ‘Hands off Zuma’ – in support of President Jacob Zuma, amid increased pressure for him to step down.

The party’s top officials have met with the President on Sunday evening – presumably to discuss his future as pressure mounts for him to step down.

ANC member Lele Sekete says since Zuma is no longer the party President, the march should actually be at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.

“What we are planning as a defence team is that we will be forming a human chain… we will be peaceful, but of course should there be any provocation that would be beyond control, it would also need to be met to that effect –  but our intention is that we think the march of those people is misdirected, we believe that comrade President Zuma is the State president, and we think that they should take their march to Union buildings. As we indicated that ANC headquarters remains the office of the ANC.”

“We do not have a problem with them defending president Zuma, but president Zuma is not the president of the ANC, and we are not going to allow them to undermine our newly elected leadership of the African National Congress… and those offices, they belong to us as the members of the African National Congress… So we will not allow them to go near our offices at any given point, ” added ANC member, Mkhululi White.

The ANC top officials arrived at the President’s official residence in Pretoria on Sunday evening to discuss his departure from office – and to determine whether he will deliver the State of the Nation Address on Thursday. The National Executive and Working Committees had resolved last month that the top 6 officials handle the process of transition.

Despite earlier reports saying ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa would not attend the meeting, the SABC has confirmed that Ramaphosa is attendance.
