Employees of a biscuit manufacturing factory in Nancefield Industrial, south of Johannesburg will be forging ahead with protest action on Wednesday.

On Tuesday, hundreds of employees embarked on a violent protest over improved working conditions.

Two people were also arrested for public violence after a police nyala was set alight during the protest.

The employees accuse the employer of treating them unfairly and paying them a below minimum wage.  They also claim they’ve been injured on duty but are yet to receive any compensation.

Community leader Nsizaw Mabotha says, “Our demand is that those earning R5 per hour cannot be accepted and is totally out of order. They must earn R20 per hour at least. Even the treatment at work is very bad, people’s hands are being cut from the work but nothing is being done and they are not even helping them get compensation.”
