Mandela is 93 years old today

President Jacob Zuma has wished former president Nelson Mandela all of the best – as he celebrates his 93rd birthday today. In an unprecedented move three years ago, the UN officially declared Mandela’s birthday on the 18th of July an international day for everyone to help make the world a better place. The former statesman is celebrating his birthday with a quiet family get-together at his tradional home in Qunu. Zuma says there is a lesson for all in Mandela’s selfless journey.

A new house has been built for the family that stayed on the house in which Winnie Madikizela-Mandela lived when she was under house arrest in Brandfort outside Bloemfontein. Madikizela-Mandela was banished to the small town by apartheid authorities in 1977. She stayed there with her daughter Zinzi. The Free State provincial government has built a new home for the Plaaitjie family, while plans are underway to turn Madikizela-Mandela’ house into a museum.

“What a man he is”. Those are the words of David Dinkins, who was Mayor of New York when Nelson Mandela first set foot in the United States of America in 1990 – his first international destination after his release from jail. In an exclusive with SABC News, 84-year-old Dinkins reveals that spending time with Madiba in those early years was one of the highlights of his career, as Sherwin Bryce-Pease reports.
