Battle for Gauteng’s vote getting tougher

Reading Time: 2 minutes

The battle for the control of Gauteng appears to be getting tougher, with smaller parties also steadily increasing their voter support.

With the big three parties – the African National Congress (ANC), Democratic Alliance (DA) and Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) maintaining the top three positions, smaller parties like the Freedom Front Plus (FFPlus) and newcomer Good are also making in-roads.

The ANC, DA and the EFF are still in the top three positions in Gauteng with over 32% of the voting districts declared.

However, the FFPlus’ Phillip van Staden says they want to improve on the one seat they have in the Gauteng Legislature.

“A possibility is there that we can end up in the Gauteng Legislature with four to five seats if this trend continues,” says Van Staden.

Patricia de Lille’s Good party is making in-roads into Gauteng with over 31 000 votes and counting.

“The issues we experience in this country are not a Western Cape or a Gauteng… they are across and we have a positive message the people are responding to,” says Good’s Mathew Cook.

The African Christian Democratic Party (ACDP) is fighting to win back the only seat it had and lost in the Legislature after the 2014 polls.
