Banyana disappoint at London Olympics

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Banyana Banyana’s chances of qualifying for the next round of the 2012 London Olympics are on life support. They were thumped three-nil by a determined Canada in their second Group F fixture this afternoon. Following their lacklustre performance against Sweden on Wednesday – Banyana were expected to improve especially in defence. But nerves got the better of them again and they conceded a soft goal inside the first seven minutes. Canada dominated the proceedings when it came to speed and agility. South Africa played to their strength – using their African flair to their advantage and there were glimpses of a spark. This time they played a much improved first half – forcing the opposition to commit errors in the process. In the second half South Africa started where they left off – striker Portia Modise was unlucky not to score. They looked promising in attack, but their final touch was lacking. Canada surged forward, in search of a goal and were duly rewarded when captain Christine Sinclair scored the second goal. Canada put matters beyond South Africa’s reach when Sinclair completed her brace as Canada won by three goals to nil South Africa take on the defending champions, Japan on Tuesday.
