Banyana Banyana are in camp, preparing to take on Lesotho in an international friendly match at the Tsakane stadium in Springs on Sunday. The friendly match will assess the readiness of the new faces in the senior national team setup.

Banyana Banyana coach, Desiree Ellis, has called up a number of players from the under 20 side to be part of the team. In camp, there are 10 uncapped players – seven of them are new faces.

The bigger picture is to qualify for the next African Women’s Championships. The senior players understand the importance of preparing well for qualifiers, having qualified and played in the last World Cup as well.

“We will be rewarding players if they raise their hands and that is what we are doing. I’ve got to be true to that. I got to give the players opportunity, the rest is up to them. We need to look for depth; we need to look for the next to the next best. We need to make sure that we have a huge core group. It’s not just for the AFOC qualifier in June, but we are also looking at the 2023 world cup, we need to make sure we have enough depth.”
