Balindlela in top 20 of DA’s candidates list

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Former Eastern Cape Premier Nosimo Balindlela has made it to the top 20 of the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) candidates list for the National Assembly.

Balindlela is at number 15 on the list, 18 places ahead of former National Prosecutions Authority prosecutor Glynnis Breytenbach.

The DA has submitted the list to the Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) ahead of Wednesday’s deadline. The final list contains a few surprises with party leader Helen Zille at number one.

Spokesperson for the executive mayor of Cape Town Solomon Seshoka coming in at Number two, one place ahead of DA parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko.

Of the 200 names submitted for the National Assembly, only one remains confidential. Party stalwarts such as shadow ministers Dianne Kohler-Barnard and Joe Mcgluwa feature prominently on the list.

Controversial MP Masizole Mqansela has been relegated to the Western Cape provincial assembly while national spokesperson Mmusi Maimane remains the party’s choice candidate for the Gauteng premiership. Maimane says the list contains the best candidates the party could offer.

The IEC has set a deadline of March 12 for the submission of candidates lists and the payment of the deposits required to contest the elections.
Economic Freedom Fighters went to court last week, seeking an interdict against having to pay a “hefty deposit” to the IEC when submitting candidates lists. Judgment was reserved on the matter, but is expected before the March 12 deadline.
